The Des Moines School Board has taken another important step in the work to select a new superintendent for Iowa’s largest school district, hiring JG Consulting to support the school board in the coordination and management of the search process.

Eleven search firms from across the country responded to a Request for Proposals (RFP) issued by the school district. After a review and recommendation by a subcommittee of the school board, four finalists were interviewed, and the full board met on Friday to approve the selection of JG Consulting.

“The quality of the submissions was exceptional, and the firms considered brought diverse talents and experiences needed to successfully manage the DMPS superintendent search process,” added Caldwell-Johnson.

Dr. Thomas Ahart announced his resignation as Superintendent of DMPS in February 2022. Matt Smith was named interim superintendent and will continue in that role throughout the 2022-23 school year. The School Board plans to have a new Superintendent named and in place by July 1, 2023.

The School Board has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) in order to seek replies from experienced and qualified search consultants or law firms specializing in assisting with employment searches for administrators of large urban public school districts.

Responses to the RFP are due by November 16. The School Board plans to interview qualified firms the week of November 28.
