Sen. Tom Harkin to Visit Brubaker Elementary

5973262666_876f5cf75a_zDES MOINES, IA (October 28, 2014) – Des Moines Public Schools and the staff and students of Brubaker Elementary School are pleased to announce Sen. Tom Harkin will visit our classrooms Wednesday morning at 10:30 a.m.

Sen. Harkin will visit with two of our 3rd grade classes.  He is interested in seeing first-hand how the Federal Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Program is being implemented and how our students are responding.

The goal of the FFVP is to create healthier school environments by providing healthier food choices, and have a positive influence on student diets, hopefully impacting their present and future health.

This program is seen as an important catalyst for change is efforts to combat childhood obesity by helping children learn more healthful eating habits. The FFVP introduces school children to a variety of produce that they otherwise might not have had the opportunity to sample.
