Roosevelt Welcomes New Principal Steven Schappaugh
Des Moines Public Schools is pleased to announce a new principal has been selected for Roosevelt High School. North High School associate principal Steven Schappaugh will move into the position this summer.
Schappaugh is no stranger to DMPS. He attended school in the district and graduated from North High School. Schappaugh earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Drake University and a master’s degree in management and administration from Nova Southeastern University in Florida.
“The opportunity to serve the Roosevelt community is an incredible professional opportunity, but it’s also personal,” said Schappaugh. “I attended Perkins and Callanan as a student. Today, my own daughter is a Hanawalt Hawk. I look forward to building on the proud history of Roosevelt and expanding it in new ways to inclusively serve students and families.”
In addition to serving as an associate principal at North, Schappaugh was a school improvement leader at East High School, the director of community engagement for the National Speech and Debate Association, and a teacher and department chair at Nova Southeastern University for seven years.
“We are extremely excited to have Steve earn the position of principal at Roosevelt High School,” said Director of High Schools Michael Vukovich. “His equity and systems work was exceptional while at North and his previous experience in both the private and public sector gives him a well-rounded view of what is needed. His ability to build relationships with teachers, students and community members will provide the space for Rider Pride to thrive.”
Schappaugh takes over for Kevin Biggs, who is transitioning to a district position and plans to continue working on his doctorate degree. Biggs will work with Schappaugh over the summer to ensure a smooth transition for Roosevelt staff and families.
