First-ever District-wide Activities Award Banquet Planned for Sunday
Des Moines Public Schools has organized the first district-wide Activities Award Banquet to recognize high school seniors for their extra-curricular and academic success.
The event will be held for invited guests on Sunday, June 10 at 4:00 PM in the East High School Café.
In Des Moines, there are over 5,000 participants in high school extra-curricular activities. This event is the first of its’ kind held in an Iowa school district with five comprehensive high schools. All five Activities Directors and Booster Club members at East, Hoover, Lincoln, North and Roosevelt high schools collaborated to plan the event.
“It has been such a rewarding opportunity to plan a positive event to recognize seniors from all five high schools,” said Ric Powell, East High School Activities Director. “The athletes and the performing arts award winners at East High were hugging each other when they found out they won. It is going to be so fun to bring them all together to be honored.”
Ten seniors from every Des Moines High School were chosen as winners in five categories:
• Athlete of the Year (Male and Female)
• Iron Man and Iron Woman Award
• Outstanding Citizenship Award (Male and Female)
• Outstanding Performing Arts Award (Male and Female)
• Scholar Athlete of the Year (Male and Female)
Baratta’s Restaurant is providing the meal for the Award Banquet and several Des Moines businesses also have contributed to make this event possible.
