This newly created leadership position is designed to expand and shape the district’s technology landscape in the areas of cyber security, information systems and services, and most importantly, the education of the district’s 30,000 PreK-12 students.

Schroeder brings more than 24 years of leadership experience across K-12, higher education, and the military. In his most recent role as CIO at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, TX, Schroeder’s work – supporting over 10,000 global students and 1,900 employees in 13 academic colleges, four professional medical schools, two Mexico campuses, and two private high schools – led to significant upgrades in the university’s core network infrastructure, data center operations, and classroom technology. Mr. Schroeder’s work also includes serving as CIO for Sioux City Public Schools for seven years, and as Commander of the 426 Network Warfare Squadron, U.S. Air Force, in San Antonio, TX.

“Neil Schroeder’s appointment as Chief Information Officer is a significant step forward for our district,” said Dr. Ian Roberts, Superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools. “His proven track record of leveraging technology to enhance education, combined with his strategic vision and leadership skills, will be very valuable as we continue to advance our technological capabilities, support our students and staff, and meet our School Board goals.”

Schroeder has a master’s degree in information systems management from the Air Force Institute of Technology in Dayton, OH. His undergraduate work was completed at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO.

“This is an exciting opportunity to bring my skills and experience to a district that values innovation and is dedicated to providing the best possible learning environments for students,” said Schroeder. “I look forward to working with the Des Moines community to drive technology advancements that provide secure, reliable, and modern capabilities that empower our teachers and students in their learning journey.”

The Chief Information Officer position was approved by the Des Moines School Board. Neil Schroeder started his work on August 5, 2024.
