DMPS Names New Hiatt Middle School Principal: Dr. Deborah Chapman
Des Moines Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Deborah Chapman as the new principal of Hiatt Middle School. Chapman is currently a School Improvement Leader at Lincoln High School.
“Debbie has been an important member of the team doing great work at Lincoln, and it’s a wonderful opportunity for our district to have someone with her experience as our new educational leader at Hiatt,” said Dr. Nancy Sebring, Superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools.
Hiatt Middle School, located at 1214 E. 15th Street, educates more than 600 students in grades 6-8.
“I am very honored and excited to have this chance to work with a great staff and student body at Hiatt,” added Chapman. “Hiatt has seen meaningful student progress in recent years, and I am looking forward to building upon this momentum for the benefit of our students.”
Chapman joined Des Moines Public Schools in 2010 as a School Improvement Leader at Lincoln, where her work included areas ranging from staff evaluation to professional development to student discipline to the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan.
Before joining Des Moines Public Schools, Chapman was a K-12 mathematics curriculum coordinator for the Ankeny Community School District and the Pulaksi County Special School District in Arkansas. She began her education career in 1992 as a middle school mathematics teacher, first in Farmington, MO and then Cabot, AR.
Chapman received her BS in mathematics education and M.Ed in middle level education from Southeast Missouri State University. She received her Ed.S and Ed.D in education administration from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where she was also an instructor.
