Cowles Montessori Welcomes New Principal
Cowles Montessori will welcome a new principal beginning this summer. Todd Johnson replaces Gregg Grylls, who will become a Director of Schools for the district.
Johnson graduated from high school in Waukon, Iowa and obtained his Bachelor’s degree at Wartburg College. He received his Master’s degree in Education Administration from Grand Canyon University in Arizona and started his career as a teacher in Greenwood Village, Colorado before moving back to Iowa to join DMPS in 2009. Johnson has a diverse set of experiences, having also served as a reading coach, School Improvement Leader and Dean of Students in the district. He also lives in the Cowles Montessori neighborhood.
“It is my desire to work with the team in highlighting the uniqueness of all of our students and families,” Johnson said. “Involvement from families with various backgrounds can lead to a greater sense of school pride and a fellowship that lasts beyond the regular school hours, helping to expand student cultural experiences and preparing them to thrive in a global society.”
With the school board’s approval, Johnson will begin work on July 1, 2017.
“Mr. Johnson is a collaborative leader who will foster the growth and development of staff and students at Cowles Montessori,” said Elementary Executive Director Susan Tallman. “We’re pleased to have him on board.”
Cowles Montessori School is Iowa’s only public Montessori school. The student experience features multi-grade level classrooms for enhanced relationships with teachers, and a focus on individual growth academically, socially and emotionally. Montessori students learn through hands-on experience, investigation and research, often collaborating on major projects. Students are taught to manage their own community, developing leadership skills and independence.
