Central Campus Launches ‘Tech Squad’ Apprenticeship
Just in time for National Apprenticeship Week, Central Campus is announcing the launch of an innovative, in-house registered apprenticeship program, a groundbreaking initiative for Des Moines Public Schools that combines real-world tech training with valuable career skills and financial benefits for students.
This unique program places DMPS as both sponsor and employer, a departure from the typical apprenticeship model where schools collaborate with external businesses. By taking on both roles, DMPS is empowering students to step directly into the world of technology with hands-on experience and critical workforce development skills.
Seven talented students — Jacob Padilla, Finian Huggins, Saidi Matwi, Julie Villatoro, Amen Negash, Johnlee Vy, and Christian Neri — will work as tech support specialists stationed at either their own high school or at Central Campus and Academy. As members of the “tech squad,” these apprentices will address technology needs across the district, supporting schools and ensuring devices function smoothly while gaining essential skills in troubleshooting, system maintenance, and customer service.
Program Highlights Include:
- Hands-On Tech Support Experience: Students will gain real-world experience, working alongside district tech professionals as mentors to address issues and support their peers and teachers with technical needs.
- Competitive Compensation and Growth Opportunities: As paid apprentices, students will receive a competitive salary with gradual increases, paving the way for financial independence and career growth. They’ll also be among the youngest contributors to IPERS, Iowa’s public employee retirement system, setting them up for future financial security.
- Enhanced Tech Support for Schools and District: Schools and the district tech department will benefit from increased support as the apprentices, trained at Central Campus, tackle technology challenges directly within their high schools.
- Meaningful Career Preparation and Resume Building: This program offers a powerful addition to students’ resumes, preparing them for future opportunities in the tech field with real accomplishments and an in-demand skill set.
“Central Campus and Des Moines Public Schools are incredibly proud to lead the way in offering meaningful, career-focused opportunities to our students,” said Kelsie Mouchka, associate principal at Central Campus. “This apprenticeship program doesn’t just benefit the students. It brings fresh, skilled talent into our district’s tech department and enhances each school’s access to dedicated tech support. The more we empower students to lead, the better we are as a system and a community.”
This new tech squad will create lasting value for the DMPS community, providing effective solutions to everyday tech issues, supporting students and staff, and contributing positively to the district’s technical infrastructure. The students’ impact will be immediate and long-lasting, paving the way for further student-led workforce initiatives within the district. This project was supported by Iowa Workforce Development and the Iowa Office of Apprenticeship.
