Central Academy’s Mathematics Team Takes First Place in Competition

Central Academy’s math team made an impressive showing at the 39th Annual High School Mathematics Contest held at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville on November 2, 2011 placing first out of 49 participating teams from Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin.

Central Academy’s team, made up of 101 high school students, won 36 of the 68 All-Academic team honors to beat Iowa City West, who had won first place in the contest for 17 years in a row. Students competed on either Level I (10th grade and below) or Level II (11th and 12th grade).

Five Central Academy students earned rare perfect scores at this year’s competition. They were Edel Aron, Eric Chen, Max Pilcher, Luke Sheeley, and Ryan Utke.

“This was our 10th year of traveling to this contest, and our students’ performances always amaze us as math teachers,” said Michael Marcketti, Central Academy math instructor. “The professors at the university were especially impressed with the number of our students who were named to the All-Academic Team. One interesting note is that our group this year included eight pairs of siblings, four pair of whom were All-Academic winners.”

Accompanying the math team to Wisconsin were Central Academy math instructors Lana Lyddon Hatten, Michael Link, Michael Marcketti, Joe Obrycki, , and Brian Reece.
