Career DMPS Educator to be Next Principal at Hiatt Middle School
DES MOINES, IA (March 14, 2019) – A longtime DMPS teacher and school leader will be the next principal of Hiatt Middle School. Joseph Green, currently the vice principal at North High School, will become the new educational leader at Hiatt.
Green, a graduate of Des Moines Public Schools, has also spent his career in education at DMPS, beginning in 2000 as a 7th grade geography teacher at McCombs Middle School. He went on to serve as the dean of students at Harding and then Goodrell middle schools; was the School Improvement leader at Hoyt Middle School; and last year became vice principal at North High School. Green earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Northern Iowa.
“Throughout his nearly two-decade career at Des Moines Public Schools, Joseph Green has shown his commitment and dedication to our students,” noted Matt Smith, associate superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools. “From his work on initiatives such as educational equity and cultural proficiency to better aligning curriculum with instruction, Joseph has worked hard to help all students achieve. We are pleased he will be our next principal at Hiatt.”
“DMPS has been a part of my entire life, from growing up in Des Moines as a student to returning after college as a teacher,” added Green. “The educational and cultural diversity at this school district provides many opportunities to our students. I am looking forward to joining the Hiatt community, in particular making sure that, through our focus on equity, we are doing everything we can to help our middle school students succeed.”
Green replaces Deborah Chapman, who is now the associate principal at Goodrell Middle School.
