Allison Salow Named Director of Teaching and Learning
Des Moines Public Schools is welcoming Allison Salow as the new Director of Elementary Teaching and Learning. Salow started her career at DMPS as a student teacher and returns to DMPS with experience in educational leadership and a strong commitment to equity and excellence in education.
In her new role, Salow will be responsible for the equity-driven development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum, assessment, instruction, and professional learning.
“We are excited to have Allison Salow re-join DMPS,” said Tim Schott, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning. “She comes back to us as a veteran school principal with a passion for elementary teaching and learning.”
Following her student teaching, Salow served at DMPS as an elementary school teacher before becoming an instructional coach at Wright Elementary. She has consistently demonstrated her ability to support teacher development and was eventually asked to work with new teachers throughout the district as a mentor.
Salow most recently served as a principal in the Waukee Community School District where she opened a new school, Radiant Elementary, in 2019, and was responsible for supervising, recruiting, hiring, managing, and evaluating more than 100 certified and non-certified employees. She has provided instructional leadership, managed teaching and learning, and developed strong partnerships in the community. Salow also served as the assistant principal at Shuler & Walnut Hills elementaries where she provided student services and programming leadership, supported teacher growth and effectiveness, and managed building systems including hiring.
“I am ready to return home to DMPS,” said Salow. “I am excited about the opportunity to collaborate with talented educators and leaders, foster strong relationships, promote equitable learning opportunities, and contribute to the realization of the district’s mission and vision.”
As the DMPS Director of Elementary Teaching and Learning, Salow will focus on leading the development and implementation of curriculum and instructional services, planning and leading professional development for principals and educators, and leading the evaluation and adoption of new instructional materials and methods among other duties.
Allison Salow begins her work at DMPS on July 1, 2024, following School Board approval.
