DMPS Foundation

Des Moines Public Schools is the largest school district in Iowa, with students representing 88 countries and a poverty rate of more than 76 percent. The DMPS Foundation recognizes the importance of varied learning levels and the need to engage the whole child to foster high achievement in all areas of learning. The Foundation works to support the goals and objectives of Des Moines Public Schools, which aim to provide the best opportunity for all students. The DMPS Foundation is the official 501(c)3 (non-profit organization) of Des Moines Public Schools, with every dollar donated supporting all PreK-12 students. Support DMPS by Joining an Affiliate Organization

• Parent Teacher Organization Defintion: A local, independent parent group; any non-PTA group. There is no “National PTO” organization to join. The parent group is responsible for creating bylaws and incorporation.
• Parent Teacher Association Defintion: A local parent group formally affiliated with its state’s PTA organization and the National PTA.
  • How to Start a PTA:
    • Starting or Merging a PTA – Iowa PTA
  • How to Start a PTO:
    • Write your bylaws and purpose statement
    • Set Board of Directors
    • Apply for an employer identification number (EIN) through Form SS-4 from irs.gov
    • Apply for 501( c)(3) status through irs.gov
    • Incorporate your non-profit with Iowa Secretary of State
    • Optional: Membership dues
