ReimaginingEducation thumbnailThis another in a series of articles about the REIMAGINING EDUCATION initiative at Des Moines Public Schools, looking at various aspects of this work, from why it is underway in the first place to how it could improve education for our students and community. In this article we look at some of the possibilities for new programs and opportunities for students and families to continue with Des Moines Public Schools.

Reimagining Education includes efforts to inspire students to continue their education at Des Moines Public Schools

The Reimagining Education initiative includes efforts to create schools, programs and facilities that will encourage and inspire greater student outcomes and attract and retain families into the district.

In fact, the Facility Planning Committee’s research is showing that, with the right approach, DMPS can offer new opportunities to students and families in future years, such as:

Increasing Access to Full-Day Preschool
By prioritizing full-day preschool programs and designing a model where every student in the district has access to the program, the district can help create a solid foundation for the cognitive, social and emotional development of each student. Access to full-day preschool will also help to guide and shape future learning.

Redesigning the Middle School Experience
The transition between elementary and middle school is an important part of a student’s learning experience. We are looking to reimagine our middle schools as vibrant hubs of exploration by integrating career and technical education and interest-based learning so students can discover their passions.

Providing High-Quality K-12 Activity and Athletic Programming and Facilities
Activities, clubs and athletics play an important role for many students and families. Investments in high-quality athletic programs, intramural leagues and extracurricular activities increase student interest and engagement in the life of a school.

Enhancing Interest-Based Signature School Programming
Signature Schools are magnet-like schools focused on specific topics that immerse students in learning that is of interest to them. There is no decision yet about what these might focus on in Des Moines, but other districts have signature schools that focus on things like health sciences, arts, communications or STEM.

Access to Diploma Plus, Graduating with More than a Diploma
Diploma Plus would give every DMPS student the opportunity for a clear pathway to explore their interests and prepare for their future. The learning would start in preschool with important life skills and build throughout all the grade levels. By the time they graduate, students would have multiple opportunities to help them prepare for college or a career.

“As we have said all along, Reimagining Education is about thinking differently and creating a new model of learning that meets the needs of each student,” said Matt Smith, DMPS Associate Superintendent. “This new system of learning will help us inspire families to remain in our district and even encourage others to return.”
