Four high school student athletes were in almost every local sportscast over the weekend after a spectacular performance at the Iowa Girls High School Track and Field State Meet at Drake Stadium. The Hoover Huskies girls track team was breaking records and making history.
Jessica Kyne, Takira Smith, Monah Kyne and Kim Karnga set a new school record, and for the first time since 1989 took the Huskies to gold in the 4×100 meter relay! Jessica Kyne also won two individual state titles in the 100m and 200m. The Hoover High School girls track and field team placed 5th overall in the 3A competition.
Athletic Director Jacob Burke couldn’t be prouder, not just of the performance this weekend, but the team’s intense work all year long, proving their dedication and setting an example for the entire Hoover community.
“Victory isn’t just about crossing the finish line first; it’s about the journey that leads you there,” Burke said. “This is the story of Jessica Kyne, Takira Smith, Monah Kyne, and Kim Karnga who not only ran the race but also ran it in such a way that left a lasting legacy. Under the expert guidance of Coaches Alt, Lamar, and Kinder, they made every stride count, and in doing so, they took our entire community on their victorious journey. Winning three gold medals and setting a new school record for the 4×100 meter relay is an achievement we all share, and a source of immense pride for Hoover. Our girls have shown us that the track to success is paved with determination, team spirit, and relentless pursuit of excellence.”
