Fifty years ago, in June of 1972, Title IX was signed into law. The new law prohibited sex discrimination in any educational program or activity that received any type of federal financial aid. One of the results to celebrate: a major increase in support for and participation in female athletics.
Des Moines Public Schools celebrates the golden anniversary of Title IX and honors our female athletes, past and present. Over the years, female athletes from DMPS have not only earned numerous state titles but have also gone on to win NCAA championships and competed in the Olympics. Today, more than a thousand young women compete in athletics at East, Hoover, North, Lincoln and Roosevelt high schools. Sports currently offered include basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. Female student-athletes have also participated in football over the years. And, those numbers will continue to grow as the school district prepares to offer female wrestling later this year as a sanctioned high school sport.
You can help DMPS mark this historic milestone with your support of our new Female Athlete Scholarship. The scholarship will be presented to one female student-athlete who will be attending a four-year college or university, a community college, or a trade school. To make a donation click here or scan the QR code to the left. Your support will help make this an annual award to our female student-athletes.
In addition, be sure to visit the DMPS Title IX online store. Commemorative T-shirts and sweatshirts are available in each high school’s color to celebrate this special anniversary. A portion of each sale will go towards the new Female Athlete Scholarship.
DMPS is proud to join with other high schools, school districts, college and universities across the country in celebrating the landmark Title IX law and the difference it has made for our female student-athletes over the past half century.
