Wow, things are really getting physical at Meredith Middle School this year!
First, PE teacher Tara Stemsrud was recognized as the Middle School Teacher of the Year by the Iowa Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
And now the school has been named one of only ten SHAPE (Society of Health and Physical Educators) America Impact Schools grant recipients for 2018.
“Each of these grantees has demonstrated a clear passion for improving their health and physical education programs, and a commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of their students and the community,” said SHAPE America CEO Stephanie Morris in a press release disclosing this year’s winners. “We are excited to be able to advance this initiative that benefits schools and teachers.”
All 10 grant recipients will receive free membership to SHAPE America, which includes access to an array of curriculum resources including SHAPE America’s National Standards and Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education, Appropriate Practices for Health Education, online professional development, and a travel stipend to attend in-person professional development at the 2019 SHAPE America National Convention & Expo in Tampa, FL.
“Carlye Satterwhite (District PE Curriculum Coordinator) came to me and asked if I wanted to apply,” said Stemsrud about the SHAPE grant. “I said ‘yes,’ so she videotaped me teaching and interviewed…some students. We sent it in and waited to hear back. Apparently, they saw potential in us. The video did turn out really awesome! I also received a Healthiest Generation grant this year. I should play the lottery.”
Quick, while those jackpots are sky-high!
