MLK Day: No Classes But Opportunities to Learn, Grow
Monday, January 16 is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. There are no classes for students at Des Moines Public Schools on Monday, and teachers and associates do not report. DMPS offices will be open.
However, even though it is not a school day, it doesn’t mean some important lessons won’t be learned as DMPS students have the opportunity to take part in events and activities to commemorate MLK Day and the work of the late civil rights leader.
MLK-related events on Monday involving DMPS include:
2:00 PM
Spoken Word Poetry Workshop
King Elementary School
1849 Forest Avenue
Movement 515 is holding a “Community for King” spoken word poetry workshop for students and their families in the gym at King Elementary School. Click here for more information about the event.
NOTE: due to the weather forecast and ice storm warning, the event below has been postponed and is rescheduled for Saturday, February 11.
MLK Youth Summit
Elim Christian Fellowship
525 E. 9th Street
DMPS joins the YMCA, United Way, DMACC and the Evelyn K. Davis Center in sponsoring the Youth Summit and “Flippin’ the Script.” The event, for middle and high school students, will honor the legacy of MLK by helping students write a positive script for their future. Buses will pick up students at 8 a.m. from East, Lincoln, North, Hoover and Roosevelt, and depart the church for those schools at 2:15 p.m. Click here to learn more about the event and to register.
