DMPS Students Earn Awards at State Science & Tech Fair

Hard work leading up to the 59th annual State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa paid off for many Des Moines Public Schools students.

Highlights from the high school division and DMPS students include:

Abby Espinosa Gonzalez Bellolio from North High School (sponsor: Steven Benson and Jessica Lambert) won 3rd place in the Engineering division and won a special award for excellence in science and innovation from the Iowa State University’s Women in Science and Engineering program.

Fahmo Mohamed from Central Campus (sponsor: Kacia Cain) won honorable mention in the Biomedical and Health Sciences category.

Nia Johnson and Abby Youngwirth from Central Campus (sponsor: Kacia Cain) won scholarships from Iowa State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Mason Rhodes, Gabriel Mintzer, and Vy Ngo (sponsor: Kacia Cain) from Central Campus and Central Academy won first place in the Physics and Astronomy category, a Grand Honorable Mention for all categories and earned a trip to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, AZ, May 8-12.

In all, 35 students from North High School, Central Campus and Central Academy presented at the state fair and competition.
