East High’s Emma Kinney and Shirah Burton.

Ten Iowa student journalists were named as Emerging Journalists at the 2015 Fall Conference of the Iowa High School Press Association.

Three of these top student-journalists attend Des Moines Public Schools!

Tanna Jones of North High School along with Emma Kinney and Shirah Burton of East High School were honored this past week at the IHSPA’s conference held at the University of Iowa.

Tanna is the co editor-in-chief of The North High Oracle. Last year she was the paper’s sports editor. Tanna’s been a member of the Oracle staff since her sophomore year.

Emma is both the co-editor-in-chief & design editor of East’s The Quill yearbook. It is her second year on yearbook staff.

Shirah is the co-editor-in-chief of the East Scroll student newspaper. It is her second year on newspaper staff. She was also a member of the yearbook staff last year, too.

All three student-journalists are now seniors.

East teacher Natalie Niemeyer, the faculty advisor for both the Quill and the Scroll, notes that all three students participated in the Iowa Summer Journalism Workshops and “go above and beyond for their staff and their school!”
