Bowling Lessons Leads to First-Ever District Tournament
The alleys of Des Moines were crowded with traffic on Thursday. Not the asphalted alleys between downtown buildings but the kind covered in hard wood and varnish, as hundreds of Des Moines elementary students did their best to hit strikes and spares, or at least avoid the dreaded gutter ball.
More than 350 4th and 5th grade students took part in the first-ever DMPS district bowling tournament, held at three different locations in Des Moines: Air Lanes, Plaza Lanes, and Premiere Lanes. The district was split into three different regions – Northwest, East, and South/Central – with competitions taken place at the alley in that region.
In-school bowling has been a part of DMPS physical education curriculum for over 20 years, which rotates over 24 bowling lanes and equipment to help students practice their skills and learn the game of bowling throughout year in our PE classes.
Students were selected to take part in the tournament because they demonstrated leadership, teamwork, encouragement, responsibility, and respect within their PE classroom. Students throughout the day were able to compete in a “baker style” bowling tournament, completed academic score sheets, and embrace the 10 Pin Values that is taught through our Bowler’s Ed Curriculum.
