DMPS Student-Athletes in 21 Events at 2014 Drake Relays

Student-athletes representing all five DMPS high schools have qualified to compete in 21 different track and field events this week at the 2014 Drake Relays. The number of events that DMPS student-athletes have qualified in is three more than last year and four more than in 2012.

The Roosevelt Roughriders girls’ track team looks to continue their winning ways at the Relays. In 2013, the Riders won five titles. Senior Jalynn Roberts-Lewis – who won the long jump and finished second to teammate Agnes Sayeh in the 100 meters – will be back to seek an individual title in both events. In addition, Roosevelt returns most members of last year’s winning 4×100, 4×200 and 800 sprint medley relay teams.

On the boys’ side of the competition, two of the state’s top hurdlers are from Des Moines and will be on the blue oval. Sydne Davis, last year’s Class 4A State 400 meter hurdle champ, and Elijah Young, who recently signed to run with Iowa State University next year, will be competing for titles in both the 110 and 400 meter hurdles. Lincoln’s 4×100 relays team has qualified, too; they won the event by three one-thousands of a second last year.
