Lincoln, Roosevelt Students Earn All-State Speech Honors

Last weekend high school thespians and orators from Des Moines Public Schools, who’d advanced through Iowa High School Speech Association district qualifiers, flocked to the IHSSA ’s Large Group State Contest in Ankeny.

DMPS students walked away with the coveted All-State nomination from judges in six different events.

Lincoln’s Group Improvisation team was one of those honored. The All-State performers are Tabitha Aplin, Glori Dei Filippone and Josh Smith, and are coached by Luke Lichty.

Roosevelt’s Jonah Kruse will perform His/Her First Date in Solo Mime.

Both the Lincoln improv team and the Roosevelt mime will perform at the Iowa State Center in Ames on February 22 during the IHSSA’s All-State Festival.

Roosevelt students earned All-State nominations in four additional non-performing events:

  • Radio BroadcastingKILZ- Addison Williamson, Allie Rapp, Cianna Rothwell, Jack Bruner, Hannah Greiner, Louisa Schmeid
  • Musical TheatreNightmare Before Christmas– Cal Reed, Julian Gruber, Annie Majure, Elizabeth Fisher, Corbin Hoffman, Connor Bredbeck
  • Musical TheatreTitle Of Show– Emma Wellman, Anne Hilker, Matt Holmes, Travis Reinders
  • Ensemble ActingBeautiful Bodies– Annie Spaur, Claire Guderjahn, Cianna Rothwell, Ellen Leys, Madeline Browning, Caleigh O’Donnell

Roosevelt’s All-Staters are coached by Lori Glawe, Alex Snodgrass and Katy P. Merriman. (Merriman, incidentally, is starring in the Repertory Theater of Iowa’s production of Our Town which runs from February 14-23 at the Des Moines Social Club.)
